A Cash of Hope

Jack Jr. is Published...

When Cash was diagnosed back in February 2010, Jack Jr. was 3 and a half years old. At 3 and half years old (or any age for that matter), the response to a sibling that is sick can obviously vary. We've seen kids whose sibling is sick and he/she will act out and try and pull some of the attention their way. Other children will go inwards and get quiet. What Jack did, however, was extraordinary. He became tender, compassionate, loving, funny, silly, kind, and basically just awesome. Just say AWESOME.

We spent months and months either in the hospital with Cash, at appointments, etc...Cash and I even moved to Houston for months without Jack before he joined us towards the latter part of our stay there. He spent the night at our siblings' houses, cousins, grandparents, and friends during Cash's treatment. Even through all of these adventures, he remained awesome. He was/is a gift from God. He encouraged Cash, made him laugh, and helped him however he could. He brought him books, milk, M&M's, Kleenex, 'barf bowl', etc. He was truly a blessing to our family and I know for a fact that Cash loved him, looked up to him, and appreciated what Jack did for him.

Wendi wrote down all the sweet things Jack said, and took note of all the ways in which he helped, and 'Jack's book of good ideas' was formed. Jack Jr. hopes that the book would help other siblings in their response to a sibling that is sick; to give them ideas of What to do when your brother (sibling) is sick.

I'm excited to announce that Jack Jr.'s first book, "What to do when your brother is sick." is published! We sought out a publisher for the book early on in the process, but if you've tried to publish a book you'll know how difficult it is...With a gentle push from Wendi's sister, Laura, we were able to self-publish with Lulu.com (it will be available on Amazon.com in March).

It was a tremendous effort to get to this point and it took many people to help - Wendi and Hana worked on the artwork, Isabella wrote the text you see in the book, Jodi worked on the photography, obviously Jack Jr. put the words to the book, and Laura readied the book for publishing and worked tirelessly the past few weeks to get it ready.

Proceeds from the sale of the book will go to families who have kids with cancer here in our community, Relay for Life, and the Seattle Run of Hope. Wendi will be giving copies of the book to Seattle Children's Hospital in the next few weeks with the hope that Jack's words will help other families. We'll also be ordering a bunch of copies to sell at Cheeks Jeans and Willemina's (availability mid-February).

We are thankful and excited to be able to have the book published - Cash's journey continues to leave a lasting impact on us and if other families can benefit from Jack Jr's journey with Cash I'm even that much more thankful...

Short Visit and Tributes

We went to the cemetery this morning to visit Cash's grave - we brought flowers, Steph brought balloons, and Hana handed out M&M's (which was very sweet and probably at the moment when I started to cry). We didn't spend much time there but we did release all of the balloons and once they were out of sight we quietly got back into our cars and went home. It was a fitting tribute to the day...

As I would believe most of you know and remember, tomorrow (Jan. 28) is the one year anniversary of Cash's passing. I think back to my Zion days and we would not use the word 'funeral' to describe the event...instead we used 'homegoing'. So let me rephrase...tomorrow (Jan. 28) is the one year anniversary of Cash's homegoing. He's been with Jesus for a whole year and there are moments when we desperately wish he was still with us and others in which we're incredible thankful (and dare I say jealous) that Cash is in Heaven. He doesn't have to deal with the trials and tribulations we face and as a family, we're that much more excited to join him when the day comes.

Jack Jr. told me tonight, "Dad, I believe in Jesus and tell him over and over I can't wait to get to heaven but I don't think he's listening because I'm not there (with Cash)..." I reminded him that it's amazing that he believes in Jesus and when it's his time, God will call him and then he'll be able to hang out with Cash. I thought it was very sweet and even to this day, if you ask Jack what Cash is doing in heaven, he'll give you a response. Cash has done quite a bit, according to Jack, and we love hearing his stories...:-)

It will be two years ago on February 8 that Cash was diagnosed. Some days that feels like it was forever ago and others it feels like it was yesterday. That is also how the day he went home feels...at times we're able to compartmentalize the day so-to-speak and quickly move on when a wave of grief comes...other times we can see, hear, and feel that day like it was yesterday and it's not as easy to move on. Wendi and I have dealt with the grief much differently this past year - I cannot look at pictures and videos of Cash while Wendi uses those as reminders of his sweet little face and laugh.

With all of the emotions and coping mechanisms that we put in place, life continues to move forward. This past year Kingston turned 1, Jack is 5, we moved into a different home, and were pleasantly surprised to discover that Wendi is pregnant and due with our fourth child on July 1. I know I've blogged this in the past, but the phrase God works in mysterious ways is abundantly clear to us...over a decade without being able to have kids, then God blesses us with Jack, Cash, King, and baby #4. He takes Cash to be with Him but the blessings do not cease.

I was reminded today of the continued fragility of life when I found out someone else we knew passed away. My old boss at Zion (Bro. Doug) and I spoke today and he told me something that really struck a chord in my heart, he told me that he's been focused on the 'moments' that occur throughout the day, recognizing that we have many many opportunities each day to stop and recognize the moment and give thanks and be joyful for that moment. I immediately went home to my family and started to recognize these moments and find joy in them (even in the not-so-great moments).

We are thankful for God's grace this past year and He continues to give us the strength to move ahead, racing towards the prize, which doesn't exist here but is in Heaven. Wendi and I look forward to that day and in the meantime, we continue to remember and celebrate Cash's life, love our children and family, and walk in the path that God is leading us on with the goal to be together as a family once again in heaven.

It's Back!

Many of you who frequent the blog would have noticed it's been down for at least the past month. My gmail account was hacked and Google disabled it, which subsequently disabled the blog. I did pull a backup of the blog back in March of 2011, however, it didn't contain any of the wonderful messages from everyone who commented during Cash's journey.

I facebooked a plea for help and many got back to me with contacts at Google and a co-worker in the Northeast put me in touch with someone at Google. The Google employee didn't work in the gmail department but I think he brought to light our situation and this morning I was checking emails on my phone, and I started getting emails again! Then as soon as I got to work I checked the blog and it was back - phew I can't tell you how thankful I am to Matt and my new friend Ovidiu (@ Google)...

I'll post later this week, Saturday marks the one year anniversary of when Cash physically left us to be with Jesus. There are many thoughts and emotions that both Wendi and I have and I'll share when time allows. We continue to be thankful to God for His blessings and appreciate your prayers!

The Headstone Arrives

Earlier this week we got a call from Gillie's and we were told Cash's headstone would be installed today. Quietly we waited for the last few days to by and today we hurried over to the cemetery after work. I immediately could see his picture when we pulled into the drive...It was a somber occasion, both Wendi and I were caught in a sea of memories while the two boys played quietly. Jeremy and his family stopped by as well. We're very thankful it has been completed and it will be a lasting, visual reminder of Cash and his beautiful face and on the back of the headstone is a picture of the three boys' hands. 4 Weeks to Go

The Seattle Run of Hope is a little over 4 weeks away (September 25). There are two additional teams this year with friends wh are also looking for a cure to pediatric brain tumors. Christopher's parents, Judy & Allen have a team as well as Rob & Bre Ann (Reese). Reese is currently at Children's and they will be starting the third round of chemo this week. God has protected little Reese and we saw them at church today and continue to pray each day for Reese's healing.

New Prayer Request

This past Sunday at church we were introduced to a family (the Gilfillan's) that is beginning a season much like ours from year and a half ago. A little over two weeks ago, Rob & Bre Ann (mom & dad) discovered that their 10 month old daughter, Reese, was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma - a brain tumor similar to Cash's (PNET), with the exception being the location. Medulloblastomas are located just outside of the brain stem in the cerebellum. Upon discovery, they immediately operated and believe they were able to take all of it out (praise God!). She has to undergo 6 rounds of chemo to ensure that the cells are completely wiped out.

They moved to Seattle yesterday and will be living at the Ronald McDonald House until treatment is complete. Reese had her Hickman line put in yesterday and she had her first dosage of chemo today. Reese has the same doctors as Cash and for Wendi and I and hearing their story obviously brought back a lot of memories. Memories that were difficult, yet both of us felt incredibly blessed to have been able to spend time with Rob, Bre, Reese, and Jase (4 yr old) at church.

We can speak from experience when we say that they will need your prayers every day - if you live in Seattle and have the ability to bring dinners to the Ronald McDonald House or help in any way please send us an email (jwparriera@gmail.com) and I or Wendi will help coordinate.

Since hearing their story we haven't stopped praying and I would ask that as much as you prayed and supported Cash, please pray for Reese and the family. Our heart aches for them and our prayer is that God work a tremendous miracle in Reese's life. Thank you for your prayers!!!

Relay Pics

The Relay for Life this past Friday/Saturday was amazing. The most difficult moments for Wendi and I were during the Survivor's lap and lighting the Luminaria bags. The survivor's lap wasn't sad per se, but it reminded us how many people have fought and are fighting cancer. Of course we missed Cash terribly but it was very touching to see so many luminaria bags for him. Here's a few pictures of the event (Thanks for taking them Jodi!!!). Thank you to everyone who was there participating! I hope to see you all there at the next event, the Seattle Children's Run of Hope, I'll post more about that event soon!

Relay Update

The Lynden Relay for Life is this Friday! We were asked this week if our band (which includes my dad, brother, cousins, and Karl) would play Friday night at the relay and we were honored to accept. Last year we were just returning from Houston after Cash completed proton therapy and missed this event so we're very excited to be a part of it this year. The Relay is Coming

The 2011 Relay for Life in Lynden, WA, is around the corner! The Relay is June 17 and 18 and they've raised over $80,000 to date! We are walking this year on my company's team (Cargill) and are walking in honor of Cash, those who are currently battling cancer, and those who are with Cash in heaven. A Picture's Worth a Thousand Words

My cousin, Jodi (a Snapsister), recently entered a picture on Pioneer Woman of Jack, Cash, & Kingston. Due to the fact that I have such a difficult time looking at pictures of Cash, I had not posted the picture on the blog. I still struggle to look at it without getting very teary-eyed, however, the comments generated on Pioneer Woman on the picture were extraordinary and brought Wendi and I great joy and sadness. The picture is beautiful and says more than I could ever write...Thank you Jodi for taking it and we will cherish it forever...

Upcoming Events to Fight Cancer

Good morning everyone! It's been a long time since the last post and I wanted to provide an update on events that are coming up this summer that we're participating in to continue the fight against cancer. First, an update:

It's still hard to believe it's been almost 3 months since our precious Cash began his eternal journey in heaven. Time keeps moving on and we continue to miss him tremendously and not a day goes by where we don't thank God for continuing to carry us through the next season. Jack Jr. prays for Cash each night and thanks God that he's in heaven playing, but last week he said something that really struck Wendi and I. We were coming back from church when he said, "Mom, it's been a long time since I've seen Cash and miss him." It's almost like he knows where Cash is but doesn't realize that it's permanent - when he asks when he will see Cash again we always say, "When it's your turn to go to heaven."

We are continuing the fight against cancer by participating in two upcoming events. Our hope is that you will continue to join us in the fight. The first event is the 2011 Relay for Life in Lynden. Last year's relay was ocurring just as we were returning from Cash's proton treatment in Houston. Here are pics from last year:

I finally was able to load the slide show from Cash's memorial service up to youtube.com. I'm sorry it took so long, the file is very large and without a solid internet connection it proved to be a challenge. I still have difficulty watching it, however, I listen to the music from the slideshow almost every day. The music was taken from Johnny Cash's 'My Mother's Hymnbook', which was released in 2004. The music was recorded when Johnny was late in his years and has a beautiful, somber tone, that draws me closer to God and at the same time reminds me of our son, who was named after Johnny Cash. I think back to the service and probably could have watched it and listened to the music two or three more times.

Please forward this to anyone who wasn't at the service that may want to watch it - Cash was a beautiful little boy and we continue to be thankful he's with Jesus and cancer-free.

It's Chick Season

Last week "Uncle Frank" called me and asked if we'd like 11 baby chicks that were just born (with their mama, it was a package deal) - we had been talking about it for a few weeks and I learned at work that it's chick season so it was perfect. We built a coop and he brought over the babies, their mama, and two other hens. Jack has been busy checking on them every day and soon he'll learn how to feed and care for them. In addition, once we finish the larger coop, he'll be responsible for collecting eggs every day. He actually can't wait to collect the first egg and said he is ready to eat it!

Jodi came over this weekend and she took pictures of him with one of the babies...the pictures were great and I thought it appropriate to post a few...

We think often of Cash and it's difficult sometimes because Kingston looks so much like him - but God continues to give us grace and peace and Jack Jr speaks of Cash just like he is: Alive and in Heaven! It's a tremendous blessing to know Cash is in heaven and he could very well be feeding baby chicks there - it is, of course, chick season...:-)

Thank you for your continued prayers - every day we receive cards in the mail and there are amazing words of encouragement that help us just at the right moment.

Re-Adjusting

It's been quite a while since I've blogged - there is such a large gap in our family without Cash that some days it still doesn't seem real. We learned quickly after Cash was diagnosed to take it one day at a time and that still holds very true. We are often asked how we are doing and my answer is always the same, God is continuing to keep us close to Him and give us the strength we need.

The past few months have brought so many changes - moving, new job, Cash's homegoing - there is a lot to adjust to. That being said, we are thankful to God for taking Cash's diagnosis to bring us up to Lynden, the love and support we feel has been amazing. Cash changed our lives in a big way...:-)

Wendi pulled out her camera this past weekend and took a few pictures of the boys - it's the first 'photoshoot' without Cash and it's fitting that Jack Jr is so serious. Cash loved it when I played the guitar and I hope that Jack will pick up Cash's love of the guitar. I think if he could play he'd play a great blues song...

We continue to receive cards, letters, and uplifting comments - Wendi and I are thankful for texts that I get nearly every day - just short check-ins to see how we are doing and scripture to remind us that God loves us. God does love us and while we miss Cash we know he's cancer-free and in the arms of Jesus and that is a beautiful and wonderful gift.

A Year Ago Today

It was one year ago today that Wendi and I drove Cash to Children's for the first time. I re-read the original post from that week (http://acashofhope.blogspot.com/2010/02/journey-of-hope-begins.html) and it brought back a flood of memories. It is still do surreal that Cash is no longer with us - I distinctly remember being happy as we drove to Children's to get a prescription for physical therapy to fix his crooked neck (or so we thought). When we look back on the past year, it's almost impossible to take it all in and absorb everything that Cash went through. I have a feeling it will take many more months to fully realize how significant the past year was in helping shape and deepen our faith, trust, and love for God.

I Facebooked on January 11 (after the MRI) that, "...Cash would tell us not to be sad, but to rejoice and be thankful." We miss Cash more than anything I could have imagined, but we don't miss cancer. Since we were unable to separate Cash and Cancer, we rejoice that he's in heaven and free from cancer. It's difficult to put into words and attach the appropriate emotion to the last sentence but we are thankful he is free from cancer and know we'll be reuinited again.

Jack Jr. asks when he'll get to see Cash again and we tell him, "When it's your turn God will call you to heaven." He can't wait for his turn...:-)

Thank you all again for your cards, support, and prayers - each day I go pick up the mail and there's 25 more sympathy cards - I have to think we've received well over 500 cards the past two weeks. Each card carries a unique message of encouragement and we are very thankful for the love and support you've shown us this past year.

Memorial Reflections/Downloads

The service on Thursday was a wonderful tribute to Cash. It celebrated his life and at the same time pointed everything in the direction of our Father. In our drive from the cemetery to the church, we both commented that we felt a tremendous peace. I wasn't sure what I would feel after leaving the cemetery and was very thankful to God that we felt His peace. We received so many cards, flowers, hugs, and words of encouragement it was amazing. We are very blessed to have such a great family and network of friends.

Even though we have peace, there is a large hole in our family with Cash not being here. We miss him constantly and everything in our house reminds us of his beautiful life. We ask Jack Jr. every morning what Cash is doing today in heaven and the responses have made us laugh and cry. The past few days, according to Jack Jr., Cash has been salmon fishing, crabbing, shrimping, and surfing (he's been very busy).

As the days and weeks go by I will continue to blog - God continues to teach us so much about His purpose for our lives. We continue to be thankful for your prayers - God is good and He received the glory on Thursday and we will continue to thank Him and give Him the praise, even though this has been a challenging season. A Final Healing

Cash left us and went to meet the Lord this afternoon at 3:50 pm. He was in Wendi's arms as he breathed his last and was immediately at peace.

I'm sure as time goes on I'll have more to say as we reflect on this past year. For the moment, I would simply say we are at peace and thankful Cash is in the arms of Jesus. We were granted the amazing privilege of being Cash's parents for the short time God allowed us to be with him on the earth. We are sad yet rejoice in the tremendous healing Cash has been given and we thank God for His grace, mercy, peace, and love.

We are surrounded by those who love us and words cannot express our gratitude for your prayers and support this past year.

Answering Prayers

This afternoon Cash took a significant turn for the worse. His breathing has become very labored and he is now unresponsive and sleeping. Our immediate families came over to visit an now we are waiting patiently for the Lord to welcome into His eternal kingdom.

We have prayed since Cash was diagnosed on February 8, 2010 that Cash would be healed of his cancer and we know from the Bible that God always hears and answers our prayers - He is answering our prayers and while we are sad, at the same time we are rejoicing in Cash's ultimate healing.

We are thankful to everyone for your prayers and support this past year - Wendi and I continue to learn about compassion, giving, and love from everyone who has been there for us. Please continue to pray for Cash and Jensen as they both are still fighting. God is merciful and loves all His children!

A Few Pics

Since the last update Cash has continued to remain about the same. He's sleeping pretty good at night and takes multiple naps during the day. His energy is nearly gone and he struggles to speak but still if you ask him a question, he'll weakly respond. We continue to be amazed at his resiliency and are thankful to God for each additional day.

Please pray for Jensen - he continues to struggle and is in a lot of pain. Wendi and I talk or text with Julie daily God continues to grant both our families tremendous grace and mercy.

Jodi took a few beautiful pictures yesterday that I had to share...thank you for your continued prayers - they are needed - Julie wrote this week that if you wake up in the middle of the night, say a little prayer that Jensen doesn't experience pain...I concur and it seems as if we are in prayer all night, even when we are sleeping.

Jesus Loves Me

A few months ago Aunt Betty asked if we knew the other verses to Jesus Loves Me - she mentioned it was written with a dying child in mind...I've been so busy that I hadn't had time to look it up and then this morning I saw the card she wrote us which included verses 2-4. I immediately stopped what I was doing and after reading it I had to share the verses.

Holding Strong

Cash seems to have slightly improved each day since Monday. He has been sleeping well and when he's awake he sits with us and reads books, watches his brother, and talks a bit. He's in great spirits and doesn't cry or complain about any pain.

We've had an amazing amount of support this week with visits, meals, grocery store runs, etc. Julie D even surprised us this morning with breakfast. For the most part, unless Cash is napping, he interacts with everyone and always says "bye bye" when they leave - every time he says it I get a tear in my eye (it's adorable).

He's hanging in there and continues to fight - I reinstalled a blog app on my phone so I can blog more frequently as time allows. Thank you for your cards, prayers, and comforting words - we appreciate it!!!

Post-MRI Update

First off, we want to thank everyone for your comments, emails, calls, meals, and visits. They have been very encouraging and uplifting during this difficult time. I don't think I could even count how many family members and friends that have stopped by - it has been so good for Cash to see so many kids playing on our playground and it encourages him to crawl around and play.

Cash's health seems to be declining rapidly - yesterday we were so worried about him that we had a nurse from hospice come out to visit. They came out again today and have been very kind and helpful. Basically they are available to us 24 hours a day if we need anything and will dispense medicine if needed.

To say we're taking it one day at a time would be an understatement. Wendi should receive the mother-of-the-year award as she spends 24 hours a day with him, most of it spent sitting on the couch, reading books, cuddling, eating m&m's, napping, and keeping him occupied and content. He is such a strong and sweet boy and has taught us so much in his few short years. We are so thankful that he has not experienced any pain the past 11 months and he continues to flash his beautiful eyes at us and smile, acknowledging his love for us, and us for him.

Pastor Robert and his wife (First CRC) stopped by on Sunday night and he said that we have been given a special grace, which he referred to as 'cancer grace'. I know that must be true as both Wendi and I are at peace and feel great comfort in knowing that Jesus loves him and will welcome into His kingdom with open arms. God has carried Cash and our family through this season and continues to give us the strength we need to endure each day. We are blessed beyond measure and while we don't understand why, we are thankful to God for giving Cash to us, even if it is for a short time and it has been a privilege to be his parents.

We would ask that you continue to pray for Cash, that he is at peace and that God wrap His loving arms around him and whisper to him that it will all be ok. I will post more if there are any changes and would encourage you continue to send us messages, emails, and calls, as they encourage us and give us strength through the power of the Holy Spirit.

A Most Difficult Day

Wendi took Cash this morning (with amazing help from Laura and Julie) to Children's for his 2 month MRI check up. The last MRI left us feeling pretty good with how things were progressing but our expectations for the MRI's are always mixed.

The news from today's MRI is not good. The main tumor has basically doubled in size and is protruding into other parts around the stem. In addition, there are numerous spots on his lower spine. The strangest part is that he still looks really good, with the exception of his right eye - over the past few days we've seen him struggle to open it fully and now that we've seen the scans we know why. There is a lot of extra fluid that is not flowing to the appropriate parts of his brain, putting pressure on different areas, one being the optic nerves.

We have decided not to pursue any further treatment as the low-dose chemo seems to have lost it's ability to affect change (positively). The hospital is connecting us with hospice care in the event that Cash will need assistance as the tumor continues to grow. There are a few experimental treatments we can try but there is no guarantee that they will even help and will most likely make him sicker so we're opting not to investigate them any further.

I don't think the news could get any worse, and then Joanne gave me a verse that was on her heart this morning - Psalm 91:11 - "For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways." We are deeply saddened by the MRI results and at the same time at peace. That peace we feel is from the Holy Spirit, which is referred to in the Bible as the Comforter (or Helper) (John16:7). We are thankful to God for a great year with Cash and will continue to hold out hope.

The amazing thing is that Cash is amazingly strong. Aside from being tired, with his hair growing back (and it's getting long) and talking/laughing/showing his teeth - you would not know he has a huge mass in is brain. He is a fighter and he is as courageous as his good friend Christopher, who fought the same battle.

We continue to ask for your prayers during this extremely difficult time and pray that God will keep Cash close to Him and as free from pain as possible. I think it would be too much to bear to see that little guy in pain and we're hoping his symptoms continue to stay relatively minor. Thank you for your prayers - our prayers tonight are not only for Cash, but Jensen and Charlie Middlebrook. Jensen's family received some difficult news this week and Charlie had a stroke a few days ago. May God grant them peace, strength, and healing.

A Snapsister's Touch

The weather has been so beautiful the past few days that Wendi decided to take the boys outside for a photoshoot...Here are a few pictures that she took of the boys.

Cash, while still somewhat fatigued, has been improving the past few days. His cough has diminished significantly and we still continue to hope the past few weeks can be attributed to croup. This Friday Cash has another MRI which will give us a good indication whether or not the past few weeks are croup-related or tumor-related. I will blog on Friday as soon as we receive the results. God is good and knows what is best for each of us and we continue to put all of our trust in Him.

We hope everyone had a great Christmas and enjoying the time with you families. It was a nice change to not have to drive 2 hours for our Christmas parties - the furthest we drove was to my in-laws home which is about 4 miles away...:-)

The weather hasn't been very conducive for playing outside so we've spent much of the past week inside doing whatever we can to keep Cash busy, comfortable, and happy. I was quite worried earlier this week as it had been over 3 weeks since his bout with croup and we had seen no improvement. We started him on antibiotics again to prevent pneumonia and this morning we started giving him steroids again to reduce the inflammation in his chest. He has had coughing bouts that he has a hard time stopping and hopefully the steroids will give him a break.

Today was definitely the best we've seen him in the past 3+ weeks. He was more alert, played independently today, and talked a bit more. Our prayer is that he's at the end of this battle with croup and that he improves to the pre-croup Cash. Mind you, we still know what he's up against and a nurse at Children's commented that it is by the power of prayer that Cash is still with us today - we do believe that and continue to thank God for each day we have.

A Conversion and Message

For those who haven't been to our new place - we have a wonderful living room with a ton of space for Cash to crawl around...the challenge was that with all hardwood floors and his lack of balance of late, he would slip and fall and inevitably get a bruise or cut lip (it only happened a few times but it was enough for us to take action)...

We noticed that when Cash was in nursery at church he would crawl around and play in and out of the houses, play with blocks, etc. Wendi went online and purchased some amazing equipment that turned our living room into a safe and fun place to play...here are a few pics.

On this Christmas Eve, we want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and it is our prayer that you and your families enjoy the time together. We 're-'learned this year that life is precious and are enjoying our moments. Settling In

I am terribly sorry I haven't blogged since Hawaii. Since we've returned, it's been a time for unpacking from the move, settling in, and getting into a new rhythm. It's great to be back in Lynden - I drove to 'town' for the first time in almost 17 years with Jack Jr. yesterday...:-)

Earlier this week we went to a small, unmarked tree farm and cut down a much bigger tree than we've ever had in the past. We didn't end up with the tree in this pic, at the last minute Jack and I picked a bigger one that took forever to cut down...

We already appreciate the extra help we've received since moving. Both my parents and Wendi's parents have been amazing since we moved - they frequently stop by and take Jack Jr places, watch the kids so we can continue to unpack, cook, clean, etc...Julie D stops by with food and took Jack on a field trip with her kids last week. (Jack Jr. really loves it here - today he took his 4-wheeler and drove to Avo's house to watch cartoons (our cable isn't in yet)).

Since returning from Hawaii, Cash hasn't really improved. His mental facilities are all there and can tell us the names of everything in his books; it's just his physical abilities seem to have declined the past 3 weeks. We hope it's still the effects of the croup but it's become increasingly difficult to watch him try to crawl and do the things he used to do. You can see him thinking about what he wants to do, it's just his body won't let him. Please pray that he regain some of his balance and movement as we continue to move forward. He has a beautiful smile and if you ask him to show you his teeth, you get the picture below, usually followed by a 'smoochy' face...:-)

It's during the more difficult times watching Cash that we have to trust that much more in God. We know that He created and knew Cash well before he was born and He has a plan for Cash. We know Cash will be healed, whether that is here or in Heaven we don't know. God did not give Cash cancer, but, "...we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28)

Final Update from Hawaii

Well we are leaving tomorrow afternoon...(sigh) - it's been a great week and in spite of some of the difficulties Cash was having, he definitely enjoyed his time with his Avo and Ava, uncles/aunts, and all of his cousins. Today my parents rented a couple of scooters and we took all of the kids for rides - I even put Cash on a baby carrier-thing and took him for a ride - he really loved it although I cannot imagine it was at all legal to do such a thing...:-)

Yesterday a gentlemen named Glenn Foster stopped by the house to play his ukelele for Cash. Glenn has played for the past 15 years at the Hilton Luau in Lahaina and is good friends with Bryce and Beebe. Bryce asked him to come over to play for Cash and we were treated to a wonderful hour of music and storytelling by Glenn. He has an amazing voice and I think the music instantly calmed Cash as you can see in the video...Thank you so much Glenn for gracing us with your music and stories - it was an experience we will never forget!!!

We would ask for prayers in our travels and as Cash starts chemo again next week that it will continue to keep the tumor at bay (and shrink it if the Lord wills it!!!). Aloha and Mahalo!

Update from Hawaii - I don't know if it's because Cash is so out of his element, but the past few days have been tough. He's struggled with his balance and fatigue appeared almost constant and it had us quite worried. Today, however, he seems to have bounced back and had a good day. He played most of the day and even went in the kayak with me out in the ocean. He absolutely loves the water and it's been so nice to be able to spend all day outside in and out of the water...here are a bunch of pics from the last few days. We would continue to ask for your prayers that Cash would be strengthened and that God continue to heal him (if it be His will). Thank you and aloha once again!

For our facebook friends, you already know we are in paradise, a.k.a. Maui. We flew in on Wednesday and we've been very busy playing so I've been unable to blog until this evening...here's the amazing back story as to how we ended up in Maui...

We were looking for opportunities to enjoy our time with Cash. A good friend of ours, Sarah Jio, sent an email to a group of her friends inquiring about potential opportunities for us to spend quality time with Cash, outside of home. A friend of hers responded (who also happened to be one of my teachers' good friends, small world) and indicated she knows of a family with a house in Hawaii that we may be able to stay at...We were given the email address and for about two months have been trying to set a date. Originally we were going come here in early November, but Cash had his hickman removed and started the low-dose chemo so we needed to stay close to home.

We finally decided early December was going to work perfect, and the family, Bryce & Beebe, offered up their house(es) on the beach in Kehei. (Their website is http://www.mauidreamer.com/photos.html - please visit and if anyone wants an amazing house in Hawaii, this is it). The planning soon involved my parents, brothers, and their families and it was settled - we would all travel to Hawaii! Everyone has arrived as of this afternoon and it's shaping up to be a wonderful week. We arrived at the house to beautiful cards written by Bryce & Beebe's grandkids for Cash - it included some of their allowance money so Cash could go and get donuts...:-)

Instead of continuing to hear me blab on and on about how it's going - here are a few pictures and a great video of Cash here in Kihei. We love the warm weather and the house is right on the beach so we spend all day outside with the kids playing and playing...

We cannot thank Bryce and Beebe enough for giving us the opportunity to spend time with Cash here in Kihei. The house is beautiful - perfect really. The time we have already spent with Cash has been truly amazing and the memories will last long after we've left Hawaii. Thank you thank you Sarah for putting the request out there and for searching for amazing opportunities for us to spend time with Cash (she also set up Great Wolf Lodge for us)...We are blessed to have great friends and are thankful to God for opening the doors for us to have this time in Hawaii at no cost to our family...an absolute blessing for which there are no words...

Until then thank you for your continued prayers - Cash is doing ok - he's fatigued much quicker than usual lately but we're still holding out hope for a miracle and pray that God continue to heal him. A Visit to the ER and a Move

This morning Cash woke up around 3:00 a.m. with a pretty horrendous cough, combined with shortness of breath. Wendi got him back to sleep and when he woke up at 6:00 this morning she took him to the ER at Children's. About two hours later she called me and said he was diagnosed with croup. Croup is a viral respiratory infection that can't be treated per se, it just has to go away on its own. He did receive a steroid to help reduce the inflammation and that seemed to help - he's fast asleep this evening.

Coming off of Thanksgiving yesterday, I was immediately thankful that it wasn't worse than croup. Cash is so strong he seems to just pass it off as just another day at the office so-to-speak.

In other news...we hauled the final load of 'stuff' to the new house today and are moved in as I write this post. It was quite a whirlwind getting everything moved but it's all at the new place. I would be terribly remiss if I didn't thank a bunch of people for helping us...My dad and Herm painted a fresh coat over the entire inside of the house the past 2 weeks. In addition, it would have taken 100 mini-van loads to get what Bob, my father-in-law, got in three loads (with tons of unload help from Dean, Dillon, my dad, and Jeremy). Wendi's mom came over today and set up the kitchen for us, my parents took Jack Jr. to Uncle Manuel and Tia Keri's to play with his cousins, and Hana brought dinner and set up the kids' playroom.

We are so thankful for all of the help and definitely could not do without it. We're looking forward to settling in and preparing for the next season. God has continued to bless us and as I reflected on Thanksgiving yesterday, at times we're simply thankful for each moment and I ask that you continue to pray that God heal and give Cash the strength he needs to keep fighting.

A Walking Video (and Snow Pics)

This past week Wendi took the boys to Spartan, a gym nearby that opens up the floor for the kids to play each morning. It's the perfect place for Cash to use his walker and she shot this video (you can see it in HD) - It's amazing to see him speeding around (and running into kids, watch out!!!)...:-)

The snow started yesterday and while Cash didn't much care to be outside in it, the boys sat by the window today and watched it fall...I had to post these pics - we had a great day!

Sunday Update

Cash finished another round of low-dose chemo yesterday. He has done exceptionally well taking the meds and we continue to thank God for each day.

On Friday, Wendi brought the boys to Zion for Jack Jr. to visit his class for the last time and for the staff to see Cash. Since Cash was stuck at home for so many months due to the fear of him getting sick, most of my co-workers hadn't seen him since his first few weeks in the hospital.

I was working in my office when I heard Cash saying 'Dad!' and I looked out my window and he was walking towards me in his walker. He tooled around the classrooms for a long time in his walker and the students were really great to him.

Friday was my last day at Zion and I'm now off work until January 3 when I start working at Cargill. We'll be busy the next month or so getting the house cleaned out and ready to sell. Hopefully we can get the house on the market by mid-December or early January. We are really looking forward to the apartment at my parents - it has a ton of space for Cash to use his walker and I hope the strength in his legs returns quickly with all of the exercise.

Therapy Intake

This past Wednesday, Cash had his first appointment with Wonderland Development Center, an organization that provides all types of therapies to children. Two therapists came and spent a little over an hour with Cash, 'testing' him on all sorts of abilities (speech, cognitive, movement, etc.).

The moment they arrived, Cash immediately took to them and Wendi and I stayed in the background as they had him stack blocks, identify words out of a book, and much more. We were pleasantly surprised at the results. Obviously his most significant deficit is physically (walking, dexterity with right hand) - he scored around the 11 month mark. That wasn't shocking since he's not walking, however, we continue to believe with continued therapy he will walk again.

Cognitively he's not that far behind developmentally. In speech and communication he scored in the 18-22 month range. For a child with a brain tumor, he's doing very well and continuing to make good progress.

With our impending move, we will be working with the center to transfer services from Seattle to Bellingham and most likely will have therapists come to our house one to two times per week to work with Cash. They were very pleased with how well he did and encouraged us to keep working with him. I think the best form of therapy he's received is in the form of his older brother. Jack keeps him going all day and plays legos, ball, coloring, cars - you name it and Jack and Cash play it.

Cash finished one of his chemo's already (the 5 day one). He has 6 more days of the other chemo and then we'll be done for another 3 weeks. We continue to hold out hope for his healing and are always thankful to God for each day.

This is my last week at Zion after 9+ years...It will definitely be an emotional week but I'm so thankful to God for the time I've spent there and we are looking forward to the next season.

An Open Door

After 17 years in Seattle, the Lord has opened the door for our family to return to Lynden, the community in which both Wendi and I were raised. We are very thankful and have been praying since Cash's diagnosis that we would have the opportunity to live closer to both of our families and God has answered our prayers. It is amazing how God works, orchestrating events that at the time we may be unaware of the impact, but the end result is an amazing opportunity.

Back in the summer, we were crabbing (on the Portuguese Crab Hunter) with my dad and Karl (the GM at Cargill) and I mentioned to Karl that our desire was to live closer to our family. At this point Cash was 6 months into his diagnosis and we needed so much support and while we had great support in Seattle, many of our family were driving from Lynden multiple times per week to help us out. I didn't think about that brief conversation until a few months ago when Karl called me and said he may have an opportunity for me at Cargill.

Last month I applied and interviewed for a position at Cargill's regional headquarters, located in Ferndale. This morning it became official and I will start working there on January 3, 2011. My dad has worked there for 15+ years and Roger, who drove Wendi and Kingston to Houston in June with his wife, Joanne, has worked there for 29 years.

We are very excited and at the same time sad to leave our "family" here in Seattle. We have formed true and lasting relationships here but I know that they will continue, the distance only being a short drive or phone call away.

There is no way in one blog post that I can express how thankful I am for Zion - I would not be who I am today if it were not for my 9+ years teaching there. The faculty, students, parents, and experiences there will leave a lasting impact on my life and in my heart. I am truly thankful for their support and after Cash got sick I was able to take months off in order to take care of him and through it all the Zion community has been there for us. I want to thank Bro. Doug and Sis. Christine for always being there when I needed help and advice and for mentoring me and helping me grow as a man of God. I would also be remiss if I didn't thank Bro. Gordy - his amazing food and friendship at Zion made the 9 years full of excitement and fun. I will continue to support Zion from afar and will pray every day that God continue to bless Zion and the 28 years it has served the urban community in Seattle.

Wendi will continue to work in Seattle two days a week. The commute will be long but she has a great job with and her boss and coworkers are very supportive. Cash still has a long road ahead of him and he will still have appointments at Children's so we'll be commuting to Seattle like many of the families from Lynden (the Brink's are an amazing example, driving to Children's 4 times a week, sometimes more).

Thank you so much for your continued prayers and support. Cash started another round of low-dose chemo and had another methotrexate injection this morning. We continue to pray that God heal him and we lift Cash up to Him in our prayers every moment of the day.

We know that with God all things are possible and it is appropriate that this month, when we celebrate Thanksgiving, that we give Thanks to Him for His love, grace, mercy, and His healing power. We are filled with thankfulness and excited that our boys will have the opportunity to grow up with their cousins, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Thank you God for opening doors!

Cash Walking

It was such a beautiful day that when we I got home from work we headed to the park. There is plenty of room for Cash to use his walking and I was able to capture some video. He starts physical therapy next week and we're excited to start to develop his muscles and tone so he can improve his balance. Our prayer is that he will be able to walk again -

"The MRI Looks Great"

Since Cash's diagnosis on February 8, each successive MRI has brought worse news, so you can imagine our anxiety as we waited in Dr. Leary's office this morning. Dr. Leary knows this and as she opened the door she immediately said, "The MRI looks great!" I don't think I heard anything for the next few moments as I quietly said a prayer of thanks to God.

After the news set in I started to ask all the questions I typically ask (Any new growth? What does the spine look like? Is there more contrast in the main tumor? What about the tumor that was hit with the gamma knife machine?).

Here is a brief synopsis of her answers - there is no new growth that they can see on the scans, indicating the tumor hasn't spread since the last MRI. The spot they were concerned with on the spine is barely visible anymore and the tumor behind Cash's eye is about half the size it was prior to the gamma knife procedure. In addition, the main tumor has remained relatively unchanged, if anything it has shrunk a tiny bit (0.2 cm on one side).

So all the news today was great news! We are extraordinarily thankful this evening for good news and we continue to thank God for the continuing miracle that is Cash. He is such a blessing to our lives and picked up where he left off yesterday after returning from the hospital - consuming large amounts of M&M's and chocolate milk (he does eat other foods I promise!).

In other news, Wendi started a 'drive' of sorts to bring toys and games to the children that are inpatient at the hospital and right as I was leaving the hospital today, Dana came by with at least 10 bags full of items that her church collected for the children (puzzles, books, coloring books, games, etc.). I also delivered at least 35 crocheted hats for the kids that Auntie Ann made - the folks at the clinic didn't have enough room behind the desk for everything that was delivered...:-) Thank you to everyone who has collected items for the kids - we remember being stuck in the hospital with so little to play with that I know those gifts will go to good use.

It is appropriate that today is November 1 - the theme at Zion this month is Thanksgiving and we have so many things to be thankful for. Thank you as well for your prayers, Dana said today that she thinks there are not many children that receive as much prayer as Cash - today our prayers were answered and we will continue to pray for healing and are so thankful for each day. Thanks be to God!!!

Great Weekend and Prayer Request

We continue to be thankful to God for how Cash is doing - he has had another great week and he's talking more and more each day. Below is a very short video of his latest phrase - last post I wrote that he says 'I do!' when anyone asks if he wants something (in fact you can just say, 'Who wants it?' and he'll say 'I do!' - 'It' can be nothing he just likes to say it)...

Please pray for the MRI on Monday - I'd like to say we've become pros at the follow-up meeting to review the results, but we still approach it with a great deal of anxiety. We know God is in control and trust that He has Cash in His hands and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't pray for a hedge of protection around Cash.

Finally, for those not on Facebook, I posted a picture of a pumpkin I carved this week - it's a replica of my tattoo. I'm now trying to find someone who can make me a belt buckle with 'A Cash of Hope' (if you know of someone please let me know).

Looking Forward

I apologize for the lack of posts this past week - there isn't much new to report (which is good news). Cash finished his last chemo on Thursday and threw up a few times over the next few days - he did the same thing last time so I have to remember to keep the anti-nausea medicine going for a few days after chemo...

He has another MRI next week - it will be the first MRI since the gamma knife procedure. As usual, we are nervous for the MRI, however, our trust in God continues to be strengthened. It's amazing, Cash is moving from what is called the monosyllabic phase (speaking just one word) to speaking more than one word in a sentence. This weekend when we asked him if he wanted more M&M's, he said very clearly, "I do!" It's adorable and another reminder that he's still developing, in spite of the tumor.

Pumpin Patch Fun

This morning I left for work at 6:45 as Wendi and the boys were still waking up...By 8:00 she called me and said they were on their way to Lynden to go to the pumpkin patch with her mom, Laura, Jen and the kids. I'll let the pictures tell the story...

Cash continues to amaze us - His strength and resilience is truly something that only God could give him. We are 5 days into the oral chemo's and it doesn't seem to phase him (giving the medicines that is)...Oh and he knows how to use the iPad all by himself now...(thanks Jack Jr for teaching him...:-))

We are in for a quiet weekend - Jack Jr. went with Mike and Julie D (& family) to Twisp on a hunting trip. It is right up Jack's alley - on the drive over they saw a bear and a deer - he is going to come back with tons of stories...:-)

Please continue to pray for healing and strength for Cash - We are thankful each day and I can't tell you how many times a day our eyes water up with joy in seeing him play, laugh, and interact with his brothers.

Another Round Starts

This morning Wendi took Cash to Children's for another intrathecal (spinal tap) of methotrexate. He did very well for the procedure and on their way out they picked up the next 12 days of low-dose chemo. One chemo we will do for 5 days and the other for the full 12 days. I typically give them to Cash at 5:00 p.m. and today when I gave them to him he didn't even balk at the meds. I think he's getting so used to me giving him liquid it doesn't bother him - he gets antibiotics twice a week, 1-2 ounces of Xango (mangosteen) every day, anti-nausea meds (prior to chemo), etc.

He has had another great day and is finally eating what I would consider to be adequate. His new favorite foods include pancakes, fried potatoes, rice, corn, watermelon, popcorn, okra (if you can believe it), and M&M's. I think he probably eats at least a bag of M&M's a day, which normally wouldn't be a great food for a toddler, but it's an easy 250 calories...:-)

Wendi also was given a walker today from a family that we met on the walk. Their son was diagnosed with a brain tumor at 16 months as well and is now 4 years old so they gave us his first walker. We put Cash in it and he immediately took to it, however, I think it may have hurt his back where the spinal tap was given so we'll try it again tomorrow.

We are so thankful to God for his progress and are very proud of Cash for his tenacity and strength. He continues to amaze us and each day when we go to sleep Wendi and I both pray prayers of thanksgiving for another day. We feel very blessed to have Cash in our life!

Thank you for your prayers and support as always and hopefully this week I'll get some video of Cash using his new walker - it was very encouraging today to see him start to use it...

Quiet Week

Sorry for the lack of posts - after the great Seattle Run of Hope last weekend it's been a very good, yet quiet week. Cash continues to do well and only had a few moments this week where we were concerned, but they were short-lived. He does have swimmers ear due to the fact he's in the bath every day, swimming and splashing, but other than that everything is ok.

On Monday he has his second injection of methotrexate via spinal tap and will start the 12 day low-dose chemo cycle again. We're continuing to hope these methods keep the tumor at bay and that he keeps progressing and developing.

I pray everyone has a great weekend and we are always thankful for your kind comments and continued prayers!!!

A Day of Hope

Today was an amazing day! Over 130 people showed up for the Cash of Hope team for the Seattle Run of Hope. From the information I've read, over 1700 people ran or walked and they raised well over $200,000 for pediatric brain research. I even had a moment to talk with one of the researchers and shared some of the most recent information we've learned about methotrexate and we will continue the conversation this week.

Our team was one of the largest at the event - we had people from Washington, California, Colorado, Idaho, and more - it was great to catch up with old friends and meet people that have been supporting and praying for Cash.

There were tons of pictures taken today and as they start to come in I will post - these are pics taken by Julie D.

We cannot thank you enough for your support and I'm already looking forward to next year - It was so great that so many turned out and were able to spend time with Cash. I will blog more over the next few days but I wanted to say THANK YOU for everything! I can't even begin to list individuals today, that is how overwhelming and amazing it was - Have a blessed week and thank you for continuing to pray!!!

Well we are two days away from the Seattle Run of Hope! Everyone I've talked to is very excited and we can't wait to see all 127 of you! We've been brainstorming about a meeting place and with over 1000 walkers/runners it will be difficult to identify a particular place to meet at Seward Park. So today I purchased three balloons - a large Diego, a blue star balloon, and a silver star balloon. The Diego balloon looks like this:

We will attach the balloons to Cash's stroller and fly them 8-10 feet above the stroller. Hopefully other teams don't have the same idea so when you arrive at Seward Park look for the balloons you will find us. This has been a very good week for Cash - he's eating again and is as independent as ever, playing around the house all day. Despite the fact that his sleeping habits are horrible (his average wake up time in the a.m. is between 3 and 5) he still manages to keep going all day.

If we miss you at the walk for some reason, head over to Zion (4730 32nd Ave. S., 98118) so we can visit - it's also Cash's 2nd birthday (on the 5th) so we'll sing Happy Birthday to him as well.

We feel incredibly blessed to have such a wonderful group of friends and family and cannot thank you enough for your prayers and support - God continues to be with Cash and each day it seems he is getting stronger and stronger. We are so thankful to Him for the time we have with Cash and will be excited for everyone to visit with us on Sunday.

Great Wolf

We were blessed with the opportunity to spend the weekend at Great Wolf Lodge near Chehalis (thank you again Sarah J we really appreciate it!!!). Cash and the boys had a great time playing with their cousins (Dillon, Kendra, Olivia, and Isaac) and I don't know who is more tired this evening, Cash or Wendi and I. It was so much fun for the boys to play in the water and it seems like Cash's strength is returning more and more each day. In fact, he was really active all day today - sometimes he's energetic in the morning and fatigued in the afternoon, but today he was 'on' all day. He still wakes up bright an early - here is a pic of him this morning at 5:30 a.m. (he took a 20 minute nap during the day and fell asleep at 8:00 this evening - I don't know how he does it...). The second pic is from dinner last night - they gave all the kids wolf ears (but I wore mine the longest...:-)):

Cash has labs tomorrow and we're basically free for the next few weeks (no chemo, appointments, etc.). We're all very excited about the upcoming walk - there are 95 walkers signed up for the team!!! I will blog later this week where we plan on meeting - hopefully we can all walk as a group (except those who are running, we won't be able to keep up with you!).

Gamma Ray Complete

Yesterday morning started very early...Cash woke up at 1:00 a.m. and since he couldn't have any chocolate milk (sedation at 6:30 a.m.), he decided he wasn't going back to sleep. Wendi kept him busy until 4:00 and then I took him on an early morning car nap (he did sleep in the car thankfully).

By 6:15 we were at Harborview and the nursing staff at the gamma knife center started preparing for the procedure. Cash was the only patient of the day so it was nice having the center to ourselves. By 8:30 they had him sedated and put the brace on his head so he would be perfectly still during the procedure. He was wheeled to another room for an MRI and as soon as it was over Dr. Douglas started mapping how to best radiate the spot. He then went into the gamma knife room and 30 minutes later was wheeled to recovery. We were home by 12:30 which was a pleasant surprise.

The rest of the day Cash was very fatigued. He was obviously tired from the sedation and procedure and fatigue is a common side affect. This morning he was a bit more chipper and hopefully he expresses interest in eating today (yesterday was all milk).

Everyone got a better nights' sleep last night and we are continuing to pray that all of this we are putting Cash through works and that he remains healthy. God answered our prayers yesterday and He continues to extend His grace and mercy to us and to Cash...

He Didn't Forget

It's been almost 8 months since Cash has been able to take a bath free of the hickman line...as soon as Cash could roll over as a baby he would 'swim' in the tub, stomach down, legs and arms flailing. Since February, however, not only has he been unable to 'swim', he's subjected to a big patch that is stuck over his site and he was lucky if he ever saw more than 2 inches of water in the tub.

That all ended today - the site of his old hickman has healed and he had a chance to have his first 'line-free' bath today. I don't think it was 20 seconds into the bath when he plopped down on his stomach and started to 'swim.' It was a joyful moment for Wendi and I and I'm certain that while we didn't tell him not to swim when he had the line, he simply didn't even try. It's like he knew this morning that he could swim again...

Lately Cash hasn't expressed that much interest in eating which we're watching closely. That being said, he's still not losing weight. In addition, he still is drinking chocolate milk (don't even try regular milk...:-)). We don't really mind because he's keeping the weight on and the absolute best chocolate milk in all the world is from Twin Brook Creamery in Lynden. Cash loves it and we can barely keep it on the shelf and were blessed by the Stap's this past weekend with 6 bottles of it!!!

It's been another great week and we continue to feel very blessed and are genuinely joyful and thankful. That doesn't mean it doesn't get hard at times but those moments are minor in comparison.

Please pray for the gamma knife procedure on Tuesday, that it goes well and accomplishes what they are intending for it to do...Have a blessed week and thank you for your prayers and support!

A Bright Moment

Cash met with the gamma knife specialist today to discuss the upcoming procedure on the 21st. The doctor's name was Ferreira and he was Portuguese which added to our conversation. Unfortunately, he's on vacation next week but the other doctor, along with Dr. Douglas and a physisist, will be present during the procedure. It is setting up to be a long day, starting at 6:30 a.m. The actual procedure only lasts about 20 minutes but they have to do an MRI first and then map the best plan to shoot the 129 beams into the tumor so it does the least harm to good tissue. We're hopeful and trust this is the best option to treat the new tumor and would ask for prayer for the doctors as they plan and that Cash comes through 'unharmed' so-to-speak.

During our wait today, Cash and I played with the camera on my phone and using an app that mimics the photo booths you occasionally see, here's what we did:

He had another great day, however, this evening while he was sleeping he threw up, which was a result of the chemo's we have been giving him. I have to make sure I give him the anti-nausea meds on schedule to hopefully prevent that over the next few weeks but again I'd ask for prayer for Cash as we keep trying to 'maintain' these tumors.

God is continuing to teach us that each day is precious and to enjoy our children to the fullest. We pray continuously that God grant us more time with our Miracle and are so thankful for how well Cash is doing. Please do me a favor and hug your kids a bit tighter tomorrow and in spite of how 'busy' we can be, take extra moments to enjoy them and tell them how special and unique they are...

A Great Weekend and an Upcoming Walk Video

All I can say is thank you to God for a wonderful weekend! Cash has been doing very well and we are simply celebrating each day we have together. Jack Jr. and Cash are best friends and Cash couldn't have asked for a better older brother - he plays with him all day and despite the occasional fight over a toy (or the iPad), they get along very well.

I received an email today from Mike & Wendy, the brains behind the Cash of Hope team for the upcoming Run of Hope Seattle - Wendy's sister and her husband, Jenny and Kyle, put together a beautiful video of Cash for the run. We are almost at 70 strong for the team and Mike and I talked this evening and we're now setting our sights on 100 people on Cash's team and we want the video to go viral so more people are made aware of cancer in our young children so send it out to everyone you know! (The direct link to the video is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LVQomUX9SA) The monies raised all go towards brain tumor research and I continue to pray that other children diagnosed after Cash will benefit from this valuable research...

Wendi got all the kids dressed up for church today - we no longer have to worry about his counts being too low to go out so it was very nice to be at church and we caught up with friends who have been reading the blog from afar and continue to pray every day. (There's even a gentlemen at church who makes knives and he made one with ACoH on it - I can't wait to see it!)

This week please pray that as we start the oral, low-dose chemo's that Cash takes them in ok and doesn't get too sick...in addition, please pray that as we prepare Cash for the gamma knife treatment on the 21st that everything will go well in pre-meetings with the doctors. It will be a busy week of appointments but we continue to trust that these treatment options will be the best for Cash in order to maintain and/or shrink these tumors.

Lines Out, Port In

The past two days have been a whirlwind - Yesterday Cash had his surgery to remove his hickman lines and have a port (or port-a-cath) put in. As usual, the surgery didn't happen on time - we arrived at 12:15 and they didn't start the surgery until 3:00. We woke Cash up early (5:30) that morning and fed him pancakes, sausage, and his usual chocolate milk (he doesn't like regular milk anymore...) because he wasn't able to eat until after the surgery.

At around 5:00 we were able to see him in recovery and while he was groggy, he downed 8 ounces of milk immediately and minus throwing up in the car on the way home, he did very well.

Today he had his first spinal tap with the methotrexate. They had to put him to sleep briefly for the procedure and since it was the first day of school, Wendi, my mom, and dad were there while Joanne was at home taking care of Kingston. Then at 2:30 we met with the radiation oncologist, Dr. Douglas, and we talked about the upcoming gamma knife procedure that will be done on the new spot in the right temporal lobe.

The gamma knife procedure is very interesting - they shoot 129 beams of radiation from all around his head into the tumor location and they don't really 'activate' until the beams cross each other, which will be precisely on the spot of the tumor. They don't anticipate too many risks to his right eye, although there is the potential of swelling. The gamma knife procedure will be a week from next Tuesday and it takes basically a full day.

We couldn't have done it the past few days without tremendous help - many thanks to Megan, Joanne, and my mom and dad - they babysat, went to appointments, cooked dinner, cleaned the house, and everything else in between. I have had to be at work since it's the start of school so they picked up tremendously while I have been in and out.

We're still hopeful that the methotrexate and low-dose chemo's (which start on Monday) will keep the tumor at bay - Cash still is doing well and we're so thankful for each day we have and now that his lines are out, we'll be able to go swimming and he can take a bath for once without a big patch over his lines and our cautious watch on any tiny drop of water that could infiltrate the spot.

God continues to bless us during this trial and we are are grateful for His grace and mercy on Cash and our family. Thank you for continuing to support and pray with us and to God be the glory!!!

A Long Weekend

On Friday we were all packed and ready to leave for the lovely vacation home that the Hoolsema's gave us for the long weekend, however...I took Cash in to have his counts checked and right before we were going to leave, I decided to call and check on what his counts were and he needed blood...So Wendi took off to Birch Bay with Jack and Kingston while Cash and I pulled a long afternoon at Childrens'. We finally got out of there at 6:30 and were at Birch Bay by 9:00 so it wasn't too bad. The blood definitely helped Cash out - he had a lot more energy this weekend so it was definitely worth it.

Jack Jr.'s birthday was this weekend so we had two days of parties for him - the first on Saturday at the KOA with the VanderHoeks where he even had a pinata to smash. The second party was at the vacation house on Sunday with the Parriera's. We all had a great time and it was great that everyone got to visit with Cash. The house that we were given for the weekend was absolutely amazing and so well designed that our family fit perfectly in it - if anyone wants a week or weekend retreat on the Bay, please visit www.rentwithusbirchbay.webs.com. We are so thankful that we had the opportunity to get away at such a beautiful location - Thank you Hoolsema's!!!

Tomorrow Cash has surgery to remove his Hickman line and put the port in. In addition we meet with the radiation oncologist to discuss the gamma knife procedure to hit the new spot in the temporal lobe. We continue to pray that this tumor can be held at bay with the medicines he'll start receiving.

The support we continue to receive has been amazing - school starts at Zion on Wednesday and I have to be at work the next few days so my mom and Joanne are coming down to help out so I can continue to work. This is just an upcoming example and if you've been reading the blog for some time I often thank those who will drop anything to babysit, take Cash to appointments, clean the house and make dinners, etc...

In addition to those who are helping us in Seattle, there are so many unsung heroes during this trial who are behind the scenes praying and supporting those who help us out. Two people come to mind, Wendi's mom, Edna, is a prayer warrior for Cash and I know she never ceases to pray and prayer is what enables Cash to keep going throughout the days (p.s. Mom, sometimes it's ok to pray with your eyes open). The other is Wendi's Aunt Betty, who takes care of Julie's kids as she faithfully comes to Seattle often, bringing meals and much needed support.

We want to thank everyone for their prayers and support, many continue to ask, "What can I do?" The best thing you can do is pray - prayer is so essential and critical that you have no idea how it keeps Cash going and propels us to keep fighting through the power of the Spirit. Keep praying because we need it and if Cash isn't on your fridge as a reminder, email me and we'll send you a pic!

Update on the Seattle Run of Hope:
I just checked the number of participants for the Walk/Run on October 3 and it's now to 46 people, up from 24 last week. Wow it's going to be a great day for brain tumor research and your support of Cash's team is incredible! I was hoping for 50 but we're already almost there - now I'm shooting for 75! :-)

Decisions

Today Wendi, my parents, Jeremy, and I met with Dr. Leary and the oncology team to discuss the next steps in Cash's treatment. It is apparent to the team and tumor board that the chemotherapy/stem cell infusion wasn't accomplishing what they had hoped it would do. With that, they came to us with a proposed plan of treatment that they are hoping will slow down the progress of the tumor. The meeting lasted almost two hours and while it was emotional for everyone, we left feeling better than when we arrived.

The tentative decision, and I say tentative because we have to meet with the radiology specialist on Tuesday to discuss the pros/cons of gamma knife but I'm getting ahead of myself...

First of all, we are going to have Cash's hickman line replaced with a port (woohoo!). It will allow Cash to be able to swim and not have two lines sticking out of his chest that were a constant source of fear of infection. That will take place on Tuesday.

We are going to give Cash two different low-dose chemo's that we can give orally to him - one chemo is 5 days in a row and the other is 10 days in a row. I can't remember if we then wait a few weeks and start the process again or just keep rotating but we'll find out next week. Cash will start this a week from Tuesday.

In addition to the low-dose chemo, once a month Cash will be receiving a lumbar puncture that they will then give another drug, methotrexate, right into his spine. He'll get that next Wednesday. All three of these drugs have very limited side effects, which is very high on our list (more on that below).

The doctors are very concerned about the spot behind his eye. It's actually in the temporal lobe and while very small, it wasn't on the scan 6 weeks ago. The radiology specialist at the UW indicated that he believes gamma knife radiation is a viable option to 'hit' the spot. The only side effect is swelling and we have to meet to discuss whether or not that can temporarily affect his vision, however, the doctor believes it is far enough away and shouldn't cause damage at its current size.

Our main goal is selecting these treatment options are to allow Cash to remain relatively healthy and hope that these treatment options slow down the growth of the tumor. It's obvious it's spreading and there have been studies that show that with this combo (chemo and methotrexate) this type of tumor can slow down and in some cases stop growing.

We deeply hope the tumor stops spreading and growing but are realistic in understanding what he is up against. Cash has been relatively healthy during all of the 'poison' we've given him and we'd like it if he remains healthy so we can enjoy our time with him, take him places, and live life to the fullest so-to-speak.

Speaking of going places, the Hoolsema's have offered their home in Birch Bay to us this weekend and we're heading there tomorrow - they even put food in the house based on what Cash likes and we're already thankful and excited to spend a weekend at the beach with family and friends.

In other news, 24 people have signed up on the Cash of Hope team in the Seattle Run of Hope - the list includes two family friends from California, Renee and Saul Castro. They are flying up to visit and walk with us which is amazing. I'm so excited to have so many join the team and help support research - hopefully someday there will be a cure for brain tumors and your support of Cash's team is incredible.

God has been so good to us - in spite of the circumstances, Wendi and I are continually thankful for His peace, wisdom, strength, courage, and hope that He has given to us and Cash. We continue to need your prayers as we enter this next phase of treatment - Cash's birth was a miracle and an answer to prayer and we continue to pray for healing.

MRI Results

Well today was another MRI - I think this is his 5th or 6th and we tend to not look forward to them (for pretty good reason as you'll see below). The best way to describe the results are not encouraging and not discouraging...

The good news is the main tumor in the brain stem appears to still be 'dying' - there is more contrast than the last MRI which either means it's dying or growing inside the stem, but it doesn't seem larger so we're sticking with it's 'dying'. Another positive from the MRI is the spot on his lower spine is barely visible.

The not-so-good news is while the spine tumor is barely visible, there is now what they refer to as 'sugar coating' - smaller spots that are not visible to the naked eye, but clearly appear to be additional tumor cells. The other news is that there is visible contrast that may indicate another tumor behind his left eye. Dr. Leary wasn't certain what that was, but it was not there in July.

Since the current chemotherapy isn't 'shrinking' the tumor as they hoped it would, they are recommending not finishing the 6th round of chemo/stem cells. Instead, they are going to create a comprehensive list of every possible study, research or experimental, and chemos/medicines that are currently being used on brain tumors - we are meeting on Thursday to go over this list and Children's will make a recommendation on what they think would be the best next steps.

At the same time, I've already mailed the MRI results to MD Anderson and they will be doing the same process and coordinating next steps with Children's. We are still in 'fight' mode and the doctors are still amazed at how well Cash looks. He has not digressed in the 8 months since diagnosis and we're holding out hope for the 'miracle'.

We had great support today and the list includes my parents, Jeremy & Steph, Bob, Auntie Ine, Auntie Dee & Uncle Bill, Auntie Karen and Uncle Gil - we kept busy and are in good spirits.

Speaking of Auntie Ine, she flew up on Friday and helped out tremendously today - she took care of Kingston and Jack Jr while we were at the hospital. We had a great weekend in Lynden and here are a bunch of pictures from the weekend and a very funny video of Cash laughing until he almost runs out of breath...oh and I also bic'd Jeremy's hair so it's nice and smooth like mine and Cash's...:-)

There is so much more I feel I could write but will stop for the time being. Another great piece of news is that there are 15 people signed up to walk in the Seattle Run of Hope! That is great and if you want to walk please see the last post - I'm hoping for 30 or 40 people to walk with Cash!

Seattle Run of Hope

Two great friends of ours, Mike and Wendy, created the "Cash of Hope" team for the Seattle Run of Hope, which will take place on Sunday, October 3. It is a 3k walk or 5k run - Wendi, Jack Jr, Cash, Kingston, and I will be walking (I don't think I've 'ran' since high school) - it's a beautiful location, Seward Park, right here in Seattle. I'm hoping as many of you as possible can join us.

The Seattle Run of Hope will raise money for pediatric brain tumor research - last year they raised over $250,000. You can register to participate in the event by clicking here. We've been so careful the past 7 months to avoid crowds because of Cash's counts that we haven't participated in anything that supports cancer research. Thankfully Cash will be all done with chemo and we will be able to re-join the community so-to-speak so we're looking forward to the event and it would be great if many of you were able to walk with Cash to support this important research.

It seems like we've been running into walls when it comes to seeking additional treatments for Cash - so little is known about Cash's tumor but we're holding out hope that something is out there that can cure Cash or children like Cash. Of course we know that God is the 'Great Physician' and can heal Cash, and ultimately, our 'healing' comes when we join the Father in heaven. So it's a win-win for Cash and for us as well...

I'd like to share a few pictures from yesterday of the family - it's amazing sometimes to sit back and realize I have three boys, a wonderful wife (married 15 years today), and an incredible network of family and friends. We are blessed beyond measure!

Cash-in-the-Box

It's been a relatively quiet weekend - the weather hasn't allowed Cash to play outside as much as he'd like, however, we are finding ways to entertain him inside. Cash did need platelets on Friday (the second time last week) and that seemed to give him the energy he needed to have a good weekend.

Yesterday morning Cash woke up and entertained himself not with the toys I bought him, but with the box (that figures)...Here's a video of him figuring out how to get inside the box - it was pretty funny.

Jack Jr. has been amazing during Cash's illness - he keeps both kids busy with his energy and can make both kids laugh with his craziness and they love trying to copy him...

This week looks pretty quiet so far - next Monday we have the next big MRI and then Cash will start chemo over the long weekend - then we're done with all 6 rounds of chemo! We're excited to be 'done' with this part of treatment and are hoping and praying that the tumor will be held at bay. In saying that, we don't look too far ahead and are living one day at time - God has been good to us and blessed us tremendously and we trust that He knows what the future holds for Cash and we take tremendous comfort in that.

Prayer in the Midst

This past weekend was very low-key. We anticipated Cash's counts (ANC's) to drop and did not want to expose him to anything that could make him sick. Yesterday, Wendi took him in for a blood draw and as it's been the last two rounds, he needed blood and platelets again.

About a month ago (2 infusions ago) we took Cash in and he spiked a fever which kept us in the hospital for 3 days...Yesterday just after platelets, he started to throw up and started getting a fever (again). We managed to get him to sleep and I prayed and prayed while he slept and his fever rose to about 100.0 but then dropped back to normal within a few hours. Cash and I left the hospital at 7:30 and couldn't leave fast enough. We knew he was fighting something but God answered our prayers right on the spot. His ANC's are still at zero but hopefully they rise within the next day.

Here are two pics I took of him, one in the hospital trying to pass the time and the other when we came home...he immediately started playing with Jack and the rest of the evening went very well.

I also wanted to post a video of Jack reading Cash a book this weekend. It's a bit hard to hear him because of the fans running in the house, but it's still amazing - Jack obviously can't read but he can sure tell a story...

We are praying for a calm rest-of-the-week and that God continues to protect Cash and that the tumor keeps shrinking. Thank you for your prayers!

I haven't blogged recently, mainly because Cash spent Friday, Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday in the hospital. The only 'added' day was yesterday, it was determined Monday that he needed blood and platelets which was done yesterday. On Sunday Cash had a very lethargic day - my parents and Wendi's parents came over for the day and it was obvious he was in need of a boost. By yesterday after receiving blood and platelets he perked up significantly and the color came back into his cheeks.

Here are some pictures from the past few days. On Monday, Bob, Dillon, and Jack Jr. stayed with us at the hospital, helping to entertain Cash:

Yesterday, my mom took shifts with Wendi at the hospital and Joann (she and Roger drove Wendi to Houston) took care of Kingston. It was the first time she'd seen him in a while and we're so thankful she could help out.

In addition yesterday, Coleson was at Children's for a series of tests with Ryan and Sara - Coleson made Cash smile and laugh and we're so glad they stopped by (Praise God that Coleson's scans are clear!!!).

Nearly 40 hours in the hospital since last Friday has taken its toll - last night Jack Jr spiked a fever of 103.2 but thankfully it's back within normal range. We're trying to teach him what 'quarantined' means because we don't want Cash or Kingston to get what he has. He's struggling with that as he loves to shower his brother with kisses and hugs but we're staying on top of it and keep reminding him...

We're thankful to be back home and Cash is in good spirits so we'll simply enjoy today and not worry about tomorrow since it's been promised by God that He's taking care of it. The sun is out so the kids will play outside all day and we'll keep hoping and praying for a miracle.

Day 1 &2 of Round 5 In the Books

Yesterday morning Wendi and Hana took Cash in at 8:00 a.m. for a meeting with the doctor and the start of the 5th round...We were able to convince them to do all outpatient this round, as long as we assured them we'd take care of the things that are usually done by the nurses inpatient. This includes dressing changes, frequent diaper changes, bathing, etc...

Hana volunteered to spend most of the week with us again which is great - We weren't sure she'd want to stay with us after last week, she definitely got a glimpse of caring for Cash, babysitting Kingston and playing with Jack. I think she realized it was a lot of work but we're so thankful that she is really acting as the "hands and feet of Jesus" right now and she's really helping out.

The day went by pretty slow and we were finally cut loose at 7:00 p.m. Cash was in great spirits all day and we took some great pictures and video of him in action:

Saturday Update:
Today we started again at 8:00 and were pleasantly surprised when they told us they could give the 4 hours of fluids at the same time as chemo...Why they didn't do that yesterday is still a mystery - but we were home by 1:00. Good to be home earlier than planned and we actually have a Saturday.

On Monday we'll return for 4 or so more hours so they can give him back his stem cells and then we're down to one more chemo session, 3 weeks from now.

We're continually thankful for those who are helping us out so much - Today Auntie Dee drove Jack Jr. from Lynden all the way to Seattle to drop him off and at the same time, Julie was here deep cleaning the house so this week when Cash's counts drop there'll be less 'germs' to worry about. (Thank you!!!)

I had another blog post ready but I'll post it later...I just read that Cash's friend, Christopher, passed away yesterday. He had been battling the same cancer as Cash and fought valiantly. My prayer is for God to give Judy, Allen, and Erica a peace that passes all understanding and the comfort in knowing they will be with him in heaven at the appointed time. He no longer suffers and is in the arms of Jesus. Rest in peace little one...

Cash's Haircut

I mentioned yesterday that Cash's hair had started to fall out...as opposed to the first round when we let if fall out all on its own, yesterday I pre-empted that by shaving it. I also shaved Jack Jr's hair and mine, so at the moment the Parriera boy with the most hair is Kingston...:-) Not the best picture since it was nearly bedtime, but you get the idea...

We'll start the 5th round of outpatient chemo on Friday - so Friday, Saturday, and Monday we'll be for long days but hopefully won't have to spend the night.

"Side!" at CB

At 11:30 on Friday Wendi and I decided to take the kids away for the weekend, this being the last weekend before another round of chemo. I texted Uncle Randy (Jack Jr's bff) and the condo at Crescent Bar was free this weekend so by 12:30 we were on the road headed to Eastern Washington. (Thank you Randy & Marti - it was a very welcome getaway!)

Cash absolutely loves Crescent Bar - the sun, grass, dipping his toes in the pool, crawling around and playing with Jack Jr - it was a great weekend. I managed to take a few pics and a video of Cash poking Jack Jr (we didn't bother talking about inappropriate touch because he was laughing too hard...:-)):

Cash is now losing hair like it's nobody's business - he'll probably be bald within the next few days which isn't so bad as his head will look a bit more uniform (as opposed to the radiation spots as the only bald spots). I keep writing this, but he is extraordinarily strong...This morning he threw up a little bit of his food and before I even had a chance to wipe off his mouth he was putting another piece of food in his mouth. If that were me I wouldn't eat the rest of the day...He's also trying to stand up again, starting on his knees and getting up on all fours - he's weak but that doesn't stop him from trying.

On our drive back yesterday Jack Jr. made a comment about the 'big ball in the sky' - the sun was very unique yesterday and for those who don't live in Seattle I took a picture so you can see what Jack was looking at...

If all goes well this week we'll start the 5th round of chemo on Saturday. We're hoping we can do it all outpatient so we can sleep at home. Thank you for your prayers and support - I continually pray that God put a hedge of protection around Cash and we're thankful to Him for watching over and keeping Cash safe during this difficult season.

"Side!"

After Cash received platelets this past Sunday, we went in for more CBC's on Wednesday. At that time they expected him to need more by yesterday so Wendi took him back in but they went up - so only one transfusion this week which was great.

He also completed his last antibiotic treatment on Thursday morning - it was a long 10 days, infusing antibiotics every 8 hours. Schedules has to be adjusted to work around the infusion times but Cash is so used to being hooked up he didn't even seem to mind.

What he does mind though, is being indoors...Cash loves being outside and is terribly bored with anything indoors. Yesterday morning he woke up at 4:10 a.m. and the first thing he said to me was, "Side!" (translated "outside"). I kindly told him it was way too early to go outside, in fact, it was too early for us to even be awake. I then told him mom, Jack Jr, Kingston, and Paco are all still sleeping and we should be sleeping to, but he didn't buy it...

So Wendi spends a lot of time "side" with the kids - my cousin Hana was here this week from Monday through Thursday and they did crafts, went to the park, and played outside all day. I would come home from work with paintings for me and a whole lot of paint on the kids...:-) Hana was a tremendous blessing to us this week - she played with the kids, read to them, and helped out wherever she could (Thanks Hana!). Yesterday they went to Carkeek park and Wendi texted me this wonderful picture:

We still continue to take it one day at a time because that is all we can do - we celebrate each day God gives us Cash and go to sleep with thankful hearts for the time we have. Thank you for your continued prayers and please keep our little friend, Christopher and his family in your prayers - they need your prayers now more than ever...

Day 3 Does It

Things settled down nicely after we left the hospital on Wednesday. Cash was able to resume his play with his brothers and the weather has definitely helped out - we spend a large portion of the day in the backyard, and today we wrapped Cash's hickman up so he could play on the slip and slide. Jack Jr. and I had a few water gun battles and Cash thought that was all pretty funny, even though he was the recipient of a few stray squirts of water.

Wendi took Cash to an appointment on Friday to check his blood levels - at that point we could tell he was going to need platelets, however, they were still good Friday. They then asked us to return Saturday and his levels were still ok, but dropping fast, so they had us return this morning. His platelets went from 50 on Friday to 32 on Saturday, to 17 this morning (30 is the cutoff). You can definitely tell when they are getting low - his color disappears and he is very fatigued. At 12:00 today he received an infusion and we were back in the backyard by 1:30. They definitely helped - he was the best he's been in a few days and even though every 8 hours he still receives antibiotics, his demeanor is still great. We are still amazed at his strength - I said it many times but I don't think I would be as chipper and energetic if I were going through all of this.

My wife continues to amaze me - between taking care of Kingston (9 weeks old tomorrow), Cash, and Jack Jr, she still finds time to take incredible photographs of Cash and the boys. Cash is out of the 'chemo-sick' phase as I refer to it and is starting to eat well again - tonight he ate two pieces of corn on the cob - his taste buds must be a wreck and we are constantly searching for new foods he may like, but his trusty mainstays continue: pancakes, sausage, corn, and milk of course.

Thank you for your continued prayers - two weeks until the next round - we continue to steadfastly pray that the tumor(s) are shrinking or ceasing to grow...

Time to Update

We made it home last night and slept in our own beds which was very nice. Prior to this hospital visit, I had wanted to post on our wonderful weekend - well it's a few days late but here is the story...

We were blessed by Karen Reinsma with the use of her cabin in Birch Bay this past weekend. The kids had such a good time and we were able to see a lot of family while we were out there. On Saturday Bob and I took Jack & Cash to the Raspberry Festival in Lynden. Cash got to spend time in Herm's oldie:

The weather was perfect and it was great to be outside and we enjoyed the time (not knowing we'd spend the next three days in the hospital)...

Almost Outta Here

Well we're nearing the two+ day minimum stay at Children's. Cash's fever thankfully peaked on Monday night and didn't return after Tuesday mid-morning. He's 100% better than he was on Monday - very active, laughing, and returning to his normal self which we're very thankful for.

Juggling work, kids, and hospital has been quite an adventure for Wendi and I this week. On Monday night, Marti H and Tami N spent the night with Jack & Kingston. Then Jack went with Marti Tuesday, Tami took care of Kingston, and Wendi ran back and forth from home to the hospital. Bob, my parents, and Jeremy all came down yesterday and helped take shifts so I could work and Wendi could keep running back and forth - today Julie H came down and took care of Kingston (I hope I didn't forget anybody)...in spite of all of the running around, we're very thankful for the help and extremely thankful Cash recovered so quickly...

The doctor's haven't been able to find an infection, however, we will be administering antibiotics (with a pump from the hospital) for the next 8 days, 3 times per day, at home (thankful we could get then training to do it at home, similar to last time).

Hopefully we're leaving tonight - when I say tonight it's probably going to be closer to tomorrow, the earliest we can leave will be 11:00, after another dose of antibiotics and a blood test. We'll be glad to sleep in our own beds...

Admitted...

Cash was pretty tired the past few days so when we had our appointment/blood draw this morning we figured he would need blood. His ANC's were zero and he needed blood and platelets - they started the blood around 3:00 and he started getting a fever...

His fever spiked over 101 around 5:00 which is an automatic admission for a few days. Because it was after 'hours' for regular admission, they shipped us off to the ER, which is where we still are as of now (11:00 pm). He was given two different antibiotics and a ton of fluid. The fluid caused some swelling and they were concerned that maybe fluid could be going into his lungs so they took a chest xray and are closely monitoring him.

We'll be heading to the SCCA soon. Cash was very lethargic most of the day but seems to be perking up a bit.

I'll post an update tomorrow and would appreciate your prayers - we pray he doesn't have an infection and will be able to go home in a few days. Thank you for your prayers!

Tumor Board Meeting

The Seattle Children's Tumor Board met yesterday to review all of the cases of children with cancer, including Cash's case. I met briefly after their meeting with our nurse practitioner to hear the comments on the spot on Cash's spine. In our excitement Tuesday that there weren't cancer cells floating in his spine, it is the general consensus of the board that the actual spot on his spine could be another PNET tumor. We have another MRI scheduled for early September and during that MRI they are going to focus more detail on the spot to see if it's grown, etc.

The good news is that the current chemo's Cash is getting attacks the cells all over the body, including the spine. We're in a wait-and-see mode right now but are still hopeful and trust that the current round of poison Cash is getting can make 'hay' so-to-speak.

Yesterday Cash received his stem cells back to help him recover his counts between chemo rounds. It was a long day, we started at 8:00 a.m. and left Children's at 7:00 p.m. Cash did great, in fact, typically during the actual transfusion of cells, kids can get very sick (the transfusion only takes 10 minutes) - Cash slept during the whole thing thankfully.

Passing the time is always a challenge - we went on many walks in the stroller and did whatever else we could think of to pass 11 hours in a small room. Here is a shot of Cash in the stroller and a short video of one of our many 'activities'...

Our next appointment is on Monday and we're praying Cash stays healthy and free from any illness. Thank you as always for your thoughts and prayers!!!

It's Not What They Thought It Was

At about 2:00 today I called Children's to see if they had results on the lumbar...I was getting impatient and really just wanted to know...

The words rang beautifully in my ears as Corrine read the report: "Negative for Malignant Cells" - I don't remember what she said after that and am so very thankful that for the time being the cancer hasn't spread to his spine - Thank you Jesus!

It's been a very difficult few days - not only has the chemo made Cash sick again, we were dreading having the puncture done and then having to wait for the news. The news we just got definitely gives us the strength to fight on and help Cash get through the chemo-sickness.

Speaking of chemo, we were in the hospital on Saturday and Sunday for chemo round #4. They were very long days as Cash isn't a 'baby' anymore, meaning he wants to crawl around and didn't like being confined and hooked up for two days. Thankfully my parents and Wendi's parents spent a ton of time with us, taking shifts entertaining Cash. We didn't leave the hospital until 10;30 on Sunday night but we're now 2/3 of the way done with chemo.

Tomorrow we have another long day at Children's for Cash to receive his first round of good stem cells. We'll start at 8:00 and they'll hydrate him and pre-medicate him up in order to receive the cells (which only takes 10-15 minutes). After the transfusion they keep him for another 4 hours to monitor and make sure he stays hydrated.

As difficult as this has been the past few days, God continues to give us the strength to endure - there were times this weekend that we struggled emotionally simply to keep going and there's so many unanswered questions, however, those moments are short-lived thankfully.

We are going to rejoice in this moment and thank God that Cash doesn't have cancer in his spine - uncertain of the future, Wendi and I will simply celebrate a small victory and keep taking it one day at a time.

We are starting to not look forward to MRI days...This is the third MRI in Seattle and all three have given us news that we weren't expecting - all have been a step back. Today's MRI revealed growth in the brain stem tumor, however, it is still the belief that the radiation effects could have been the cause for the growth. On a positive note, there was significant contrast in the tumor, which indicates the cells are dying (at its core).

They did identify a new spot, however, this one is on the lower portion of his spine. They are unsure of what it is and there is a small chance that it's unrelated to the tumor, but it is a small chance. On Monday Cash is going to have a lumbar puncture to pull some of the spinal fluid and check it to see if the cells are PNET. If it is PNET then the tumor has spread down his spine.

We are going to proceed with the next three rounds of chemo starting tomorrow morning. The two chemo's he'll be getting will flow to the spine so if the cells are bad they could be affected by the chemo. We are again reminded not to look too far ahead and simply take it one day at a time. It's definitely been a tough day and just as we feel like we're getting on top of this, something else happens. Our faith isn't wavering, however, and we trust that God has Cash in His hands. We are thankful that he's not in pain at the moment and continue to pray that this round of chemo will stop the cells from dividing.

This morning, not knowing what the day would hold, I downloaded an app that allows me to take pictures that look somewhat 'vintage'. I went a little crazy today and here is an assortment of pics I took with Cash. My father-in-law, Bob, and my parents came by today and spent quality time with Cash (as you'll see in the pics). Tomorrow Bob & Edna and my parents will be with us, splitting time between the hospital and the home, helping us care for both Cash and Kingston. Jack Jr. is having the time of his life in Lynden with Uncle Jeremy and his family. It is heartwarming to know we have such an amazing set of parents and family - they are all with us and helping us through this.

Please continue to pray for Cash and Christopher - two of the three kids in North America with this tumor reside here in the Northwest and they are both fighting to try and beat this. Thank you for your support and prayers!

Another MRI

It has been a great week in Seattle (and the weather has been perfect) - this past weekend we were in Crescent Bar and the weather provided Cash with the ability to crawl around outside nearly all day. Without being on chemo, he's under no added threat of infection so he played and played all weekend. Wendi is pulling the pictures from the weekend and I will post them soon.

From a progress standpoint, Cash is doing well - he continues to try and stand and loves climbing the stairs. The stairs are definitely the best exercise he can get when it comes to strength building.

Prior to starting the 4th round of chemo on Saturday, Cash has an MRI tomorrow. While it's not expected that it will reveal any significant shrinkage (the radiation effects last for 2-3 months), we are desperately praying the tumor hasn't grown and spread to other parts of his brain and/or spine.

Observing Cash closely the past few weeks, I truly believe he can be healed - that being said, we absolutely know that we are not in control of that decision and continue to lift Cash up in prayer to God. Some days it seems like we spend the entire day (in our minds), silently petitioning the Lord for healing. Most often my prayers continue to be prayers of thanksgiving, thanking God for the miracle that is Cash and celebrating each day/hour/moment we have with him.

We also continue to pray for all of the kids we've met with cancer - some are doing well and others not so well. I keep praying that God grant us and these families peace, strength, patience, and understanding and would ask that you continue to pray for Cash and all those who are battling cancer.

Studio Shots, a Prayer Request, and a Short Message

Even though I'm married to the most wonderful photographer in the world, occasionally she prefers to have the boys' picture taken at a studio...on Monday we took the kids and had their pictures taken. It was quite an adventure but the boys did great - here are two of Wendi's favorites:

Jack Jr. is such a blessing to us - we are so thankful that God placed him in our lives 3 years ago. His tenderness for his brother is a testimony in itself.

On another note, please be in prayer for Christopher Hartley (age 3, PNET tumor like Cash) - his family received news yesterday that his tumor is spreading in spite of the treatment. Pray for strength, understanding, and peace as they process this new information and continue to fight.

We will cherish and enjoy each day the Lord gives us with our children - after hearing the news about Christopher yesterday, I was brought back to my early days in Catechism (thank you Rev. Joostens for making sure I knew this!) - Lord's Day 1:

Cancer is a result of sin and thank God that Jesus paid for all sin with his death on the cross. While I don't know when I (or anyone else) will leave this earth, it is a tremendous comfort to know that our salvation has been worked out through Christ's blood and when that day comes we will be free from sin (and cancer) and death and live with God forever...

We are so thankful that Cash has done so well lately. In fact, the past few days he has seemed to improve even more (God is so good!). I know this next video may seem extremely boring, however, it shows Cash's dexterity - he hasn't eaten yogurt by himself since he got sick...in this video you can see he's eating without too much mess...:-)

Relay for Life

Yesterday in Lynden was the Relay for Life, an American Cancer Society event that celebrates and honors cancer survivors and current cancer patients. We were unable to attend, however, I was sent some amazing pictures from the event. Many of you who have been supporting and praying for Cash were there and Coleson Brink cut the ribbon to kick off the event.

This week Coleson received great news at Seattle Childrens - his cancer is in remission (the scans came back clear)! We are thankful to God for answering prayers and continue to pray for the Brink's and celebrate with them - we hope maybe next year at this time Cash can cut the ribbon...

While I don't have a picture yet, Wendi's dad (my father-in-law), Bob VanderHoek and Mel Yonkman walked the track until midnight! Bob and Mel walked to honor Aunt Alyce, who recently passed after a battle with cancer, and celebrate Cash and his progress to date.

We are continually amazed at the support of our community in helping those who are fighting cancer and want to thank everyone who walked for Cash! We'll see you next year, hopefully by that time (Lord willing), Cash can actually walk the track himself in the survivor lap.

Back @ Children's

I hope all the dads had a great Father's Day. The entire Jack & Wilma Parriera (Sr) clan drove to our house from Lynden for a bbq - we had a great time and even though the weather didn't cooperate, we were still able to roast marshmallows (in the rain).

This morning Cash had his first appointment with Dr. Leary at Seattle Children's. She hadn't see him since we left and I was encouraged that in the short visit Cash had with her, she was very encouraged about his progress. We talked about the next round of chemo and tentatively scheduled it for July 10. He'll receive two types of chemo, both are very powerful, thus he'll need to have his own stem cells given back to speed up the recovery between treatments.

Here are a few pictures from the last day at the proton center as well as the kids playing around the house. We are all thankful to be home and I'm thankful for your continued prayers and support. Our new friends Doug & Misty and their son, Zack, are in this picture. They started treatment for Zack the day after Cash and we spent a lot of time with them in Houston.

Home Sweet Home

We successfully made the trip back to Seattle yesterday. It started at 3:20 a.m. when Cash woke up - not sure why he woke up but it gave us plenty of time to get everything ready. Drew (Houston Texans) picked us up at 4:45 and we were at the airport by 5:20, but then it got interesting...It took nearly an hour and 20 minutes to get checked in and through security - we literally got to the gate and they started boarding. Cash didn't really know what to think but Jack had a blast:

Even though the adults were all in a sweat, the kids were great on the plane. Jack and Cash were with me and they watched movies and played, Wendi and Kingston were with my mom (we could not have done it without her...) a few rows in front. Corey and Katey were waiting for us when we landed and all of our luggage was first to come off the conveyor belt (that never happens!).

It is so good to be home and I think the kids know it too - they all slept well last night and have had a great day playing around the house. Cash picked up where he left off, constantly looking for things to get into and he loves playing in Jack's room.

We had so much help in Houston and that made the 7 weeks go by very quickly. Thank you to all for your support and prayers and have a blessed Father's Day this weekend, I know I will - I am very blessed and thankful.

Graduation Day

The morning started out great with a victory for the Netherlands - the kids were all geared up thanks to Auntie Karen:

Graduation almost didn't happen today...This morning (8:00) as we were all getting into the car the Proton Center called and said the machines were down and we'd have to wait until it was up before heading over there. Thankfully at around 10 it was running and by 10:30 Cash was in treatment.

It was definitely a great morning although we had to keep Cash from wanting to eat or drink until much later than usual. Kent Postma stopped by to say goodbye and Carol Nelson joined us for the graduation. In addition, we've made great friends with Doug and Misty, whose son Zack is three days behind Cash in treatment. Doug and his family started driving down from Auburn the same day Jeremy, Cash, and I flew to Houston. I know Jack and Cash will miss playing with Zack, they've had a lot of fun in spite of the circumstance.

The staff at MD showered Cash with gifts...As you'll see in the video he gets presents from the staff. They were so wonderful - They treated him like they were their own and we're so thankful to God for putting them in the right place at the right time for Cash. Please be in prayer for the Purdue family (one of the doctors), their mother, Mrs. Bobby Harris needs prayer for total healing and strength.

We are now busily preparing to head home. Thanks to Carol, we have a ride at 4:30 in the morning on Wednesday in one of the Texans' vans - we have 3 adults and 3 children, 3 carseats, 6 suitcases, not to mention my guitar and everything else we brought down.

I also want to thank the folks at Impact Church (The Middlebrooks) - Jim D and his wife volunteered to come to our apartment when we leave and clean it all up and check out for us. That is a tremendous burden lifted as we'll be very busy just packing and taking care of the kids.

I will also dedicate a full post to my mom when we return - she's spent nearly 5 weeks with us and has done all of the cooking, cleaning, buying groceries, and running errands - not to mention going to every appointment with us and taking excellent care of the kids. We have been tremendously blessed to have her (and earlier this journey, Jeremy and my dad) spend so much time with us - I could not have done it without her.

Well another step in Cash's journey is almost completed...he still has three more rounds of chemo and we'll meet with Dr. Leary on June 21. There is an MRI scheduled on July 2 and we'll start the first round on July 5 (hopefully). We continue to pray that this tumor has been disrupted enough to stop growing and as always thank you for your prayers and support - we definitely couldn't do it without you!

A Cut for Cash for Locks of Love

We've had many boys and men cut their hair for Cash, however, I've not even asked any ladies if they would cut their hair for Cash. Not only has Wendi's cousin, Julie, been extraordinarily helpful during the past few months to our family, she decided to cut her hair for Cash and donate it to Locks of Love, an amazing organization that provides hair to disadvantaged children that have hair loss due to a medical condition.

Another Amazing Gift

Last night Betty Douma called my mom and told her some amazing news about a gift that was given to Cash. I was sleeping so they had to wait until the morning to break the news to me, although my mom told me she was tempted to wake me up (if we hadn't been averaging 4-5 hours per night thanks to Kingston I know she would have :-))...

It was announced last night at graduation that the Lynden Christian Class of 2010 has given their Class Gift to the Cash Parriera Benefit Fund - I emailed Don Kok (Superintendent) at LC this morning and asked him how we could possibly thank the Seniors for such a tremendous gift. If I could I would write letters to all 98 students in the class of 2010 but I'll start by trying to thank them via this blog.

I spoke with Kim (Assistant Principal) this afternoon and she told me that many of the students were aware of Cash's diagnosis and keep up at school via the blog. In addition, many of the students from the Jazz Band performed at Cash's benefit a few weeks ago and Kim told me the decision to use their gift for Cash was unanimous.

From the early diagnosis all the way through the treatment here at MD Anderson, we have continually been amazed at the spirit and generosity of people. The students at LC in the Class of 2010 were born approximately the year I graduated from LC - I don't 'know' them per se, however, I 'know' of their spirit and it is amazing. Thank you LC Grads for your generous gift, we will use it to continue to help Cash fight and your unity demonstrates your strength and trust in God.

Speaking of fighting, I google'd 'brain tumor' just on a whim today and came across a story about a new surgery technique that was used on a child with a brain stem tumor...I immediately called the hospital and am waiting to hear back from the head nurse. The surgery took place in Belgium - apparently there are only a few people in the world who can use it and the equipment is there - If God leads us there to help Cash that's what we'll do. Thank You Leann and Pictures

Well Cash is down to one more treatment on Monday! We are very excited that he has almost completed treatment and very thankful that he's done quite well (Praise God!). On Wednesday, Leann left (:-() to go back to Iowa. She is missed by all of us, including Jack who had so much fun with her. Leann was great with the kids and helped out so much we are very thankful she was able to join us for a week.

This week has been interesting from a weather standpoint - nearly every day there has been threat of thunderstorms and today it apparently is supposed to feel like 105 degrees...I hear all it has been doing in Seattle is raining so maybe we'll bring back some sunshine...

I think Cash is going to follow in my dad's footsteps and be a guitar player - every time I play the guitar he immediately comes over to join me...

So it's our last weekend here in Houston and we're continually thankful to God for protecting Cash during his treatments. We will miss the new friends we've made (Carol, the Middlebrook's, the folks at MD, Doug, Misty & Zach) but are excited to get back to Seattle. Thank you for your prayers and continued support!!!

Zion Fundraiser and Assembly

I have often mentioned how thankful I am to Zion for allowing me the time off, really starting in February when Cash was first diagnosed. The staff, students, and families have Zion have been amazing to our family. Bro. Gordy sold dinners for multiple weeks leading up to raise money for Cash and Bro. Keith (a parent) took pictures of the students for Career Day as a fundraiser as well. In total, they raised over $2,500 for Cash - what a tremendous blessing Zion has been to our family during this trial.

In addition, this past Thursday, they had an assembly for Cash. I was able (thanks to Sis. Julie and Sis. Janae) to Skype in - we watched the assembly and then I gave a brief 'sermon' to the students. The choir sang and then they released balloons with 'A Cash of Hope' into the skies - Dr. Jackson's hope is that once they land people would go to the website to learn more about Cash and pray. It was a very special event and I am honored to be a part of such a wonderful community. Bro. Keith took pictures and emailed them to me - here are a few of the wonderful students and staff:

Last Full Week Starts Tomorrow

I can't believe how quickly the past 5+ weeks have gone. We are already down to 6 more days of proton therapy for Cash. Which means that next weekend will be our last in Houston - it's definitely bittersweet - Cash will be done with radiation for good (it's a once-in-a-lifetime event) and we've made great friends down here. Today my mom and I went to the Middlebrook's church, Impact Houston (http://www.impacthouston.org/) and very much enjoyed the fellowship with Charlie, Mollie, and the folks we met.

It seems like I haven't had much time to blog lately but I wanted to continue to thank God for Cash's progress. Every day we witness him doing things he used to do 'pre-tumor' (whenever that was) and we're enjoying spending each moment with him and the family. The boys are amazing with Kingston, they continue to kiss him and rub his head, although Cash is working on what it means to be 'gentle'...:-) We attempted to photograph the future 'band' as I'm referring to them tonight - here are a few photos:

This past week we went to Kemah and it was the first time taking all of our boys out - it took at least 45 minutes to drive the first 15 miles and it wasn't because there was traffic (McDonald's attempt, bathroom, feeding, and finally a Dairy Queen disaster (did you know they sell Chicken Fried Steak burgers down here? I accidentally found that out)). But we made it and we had a great time:

I forgot to post earlier this week, when it was time for proton treatment Cash went to his favorite nurse, Stephanie, then when they got to the room he went to Cynthia, his favorite anesthetist:

A Sequence of Pictures

It's been a busy few days here in Houston. Yesterday Cash had his proton therapy then we went to see his oncologist at the main MD hospital. Thankfully he didn't didn't a transfusion and he only has proton therapy until June 14 or 15 so we're getting close to coming back to Seattle!

One of my mom's good friends from Iowa flew in today and is staying with us through the 9th. Jack and Cash have already taken to her, Leanne is a teacher and she's already started teaching Jack a lot of things - it's almost like pre-school at the condo. We're very thankful she's here, now we have 4 adults for the 3 kids...

On Monday the Middlebrook's gave Jack and I tickets to the Astro's game and I had to share this sequence of pictures, they tell quite a story...

Here's Jack right when we arrive...he loves baseball and was excited to see a steam train in the stadium (it is on the left field wall and goes back and forth when a run is scored...

I then proceed to buy him popcorn, which you can tell he's excited about...

After eating most of the popcorn, we get a fritter of sorts - he called it 'strings with sugar on it'...

And about the 6th inning he crashed and slept on my lap until we left the game...:-)

Kingston also doing great - he's just over 2 weeks old and both of his older brothers are very gentle and sweet with him...they'll be that way until he starts taking their toys and then I'm sure they will have their bouts...:-)

Tomorrow morning I'm skyping in to Zion to talk with the students...It will be great to see them and share Cash's story and hopefully reveal to them God's sovereignty in the midst of trials. We continue to be very thankful for this opportunity for Cash to be healed and ask that you continue to pray for him in his treatments. Benefit Details

Last week I posted a huge thank you to everyone for the benefit that was held on May 21 - but now I want to say thank you again as we've received the final details on the amount raised for Cash. The tickets for the benefit completely sold out and Rose and her team upped the number of plates from 500 to 700 all in the last minute. Over 650 people were in attendance and at one point online there were over 200 people watching the live feed. In addition, many people received haircuts, or Cuts for Cash, and I know there were quite a few more people with shaved heads in the building that night...:-)

By the end of the night, with ticket sales, the auctions, flowers from Kim, and the dessert dash, the benefit raised over $55,000! What an amazing testament to the support and generosity that has been shown, to be honest we are completely overwhelmed with thankfulness. So many people from the communities we live, have lived in, or know people in have joined together to help us fight.

The money will be used to help Cash continue to fight - we know that after treatment the battle is not over, Cash will need years of physical therapy, speech therapy, and unless his tumor completely goes away with the recent radiation treatments, he'll also need experimental treatments. Many of the experimental treatments we are discussing are coming from the wonderful team of doctors here at MD Anderson and at Seattle Children's - they are working together to ensure Cash receives the absolute best.

We cannot thank you enough for your time, commitment, support, and prayers during our journey. Even though Cash's tumor isn't by any means a 'blessing', God has seen to it that we are blessed and that He is glorious. Thanks be to God for His goodness and please continue to pray with us for healing for Cash!

Quiet Weekend

Cash is over halfway done with treatment! In fact the schedule we received on Friday showed only 10 more treatments. Monday is a holiday so the tentative final treatment date is June 14. Cash is doing great and it's been wonderful to have the whole family here. I uploaded a video of Cash being very sweet with Kingston - you can see it on youtube here.

It's really too hot to take the kids outside so we're staying home this weekend. We will try and take the kids to the zoo or the aquarium again next week, but we're learning we have to go as early as possible. The temperature rarely drops below 85 and the humidity stays around 90%...a bit different than Seattle. :-)

I have two additional prayer requests this week - the first is for the Yonkman family, Wendi's Aunt Alyce passed away this week after a long battle with cancer. Aunt Alyce was very instrumental in my becoming a teacher and she made me a better teacher during our many conversations and will be missed tremendously. The second is for the Brink family - Coleson's last scan revealed additional spots so they did a biopsy to determine what the spots are. I hope they are benign as I know the Brink's are as well. Any news regarding cancer since Cash's diagnosis has a much deeper impact on me than it did before. Cancer has no age restrictions and no bounds and I look forward to the day when we're in Glory and don't have to worry about it anymore...

They Made It!

First of all I can't say thank you enough to Roger and Joann - Roger drove nearly 40 straight hours to get Wendi and Kingston here to Houston, resting only for a short 1 hour break and another 4 hour break last night. They only stopped because of tornado warnings in Kansas. Nine states in less than 2 days is amazing and God kept them safe. I didn't get enough video of the arrival, although here's a small clip when they were almost here and when Wendi got a chance to kiss Cash. Jack and Cash are with Wendi and Kingston is with me in the living room because I learned quickly that his cry would wake up both boys and then we'd have our hands even fuller than they already are:

What a blessing it is to be together as a family, Jack was great with Kingston when he met him, Cash more concerned about his mama than anything else. We're so thankful to God for His many blessings and please pray that Roger and Joann have a safe drive back to Lynden. They are resting for the night in Galveston and will take off again tomorrow morning. They are amazing and I'm so thankful that they were able to bring Wendi and Kingston here.

Update on the Caravan...

Today was one of those days that started at the hospital early and ended late...On Tuesdays after treatment we go to the main hospital to meet with Cash's oncologist. Last week his counts were just above the levels required for a transfusion - this morning we found out he needed one today at 1:00. In between appointments we ran a few errands and Cash received a transfusion from 1:00 until about 5:00.

His energy level was definitely up after the transfusion and he played with Jack Jr. until bedtime. Speaking of Jack Jr., he has been the best thing for Cash the past few weeks. Today again he entertained him and kept him busy in spite of the long day...

Wendi kept us posted today with their progress and by the time of this email they are nearing Wichita, Kansas! She just texted me and said they are 14 hours away and are finally stopping for the night (there are thunderstorms nearing Wichita). I'm thankful they finally stopped and thankful that God has protected them throughout a near 30-hour drive. I'll continue to pray for safe travels and hopefully tomorrow we'll all be together once again as a family for the first time in nearly 5 weeks.

Thank you Roger and Joann for driving Wendi and Kingston to Houston - what an amazing blessing and thank you to all for your support and prayers!!!

Three days after the benefit and we're still overwhelmed with the support and gratitude everyone showed and today another tremendous blessing came our way...Roger and his wife (my dad works with Roger at Cargill) rented a motorhome and today at 5:00 they picked Wendi and Kingston up from Seattle and are driving them down to Houston!

Wendi and Kingston were not going to be cleared to fly until nearly the time Cash was finishing treatments so Roger volunteered to drive her and Kingston here to get them here much quicker. At first we weren't certain how long it would take to clear her to fly but last night Wendi decided she'd had enough waiting and was feeling good so she called Roger and by this morning he had made all of the arrangements! It takes at least 40 hours to drive from Seattle to Houston but they are already on their way - Kingston still sleeps quite a bit so I think the drive will be good for both of them.

Needless to say, Jack, Cash, and I are very excited - Cash hasn't seen his mom in over 4 weeks and neither boy has met their little brother. If I could ask you to pray, I would ask that you pray they have a safe trip and that God puts a hedge of protection around them and the motorhome. Kingston won't remember the trip of course, but he'll definitely have stories to tell someday of his travels...:-)

I'll keep you updated on their progress and cannot thank Roger and his wife enough - what a blessing - we are blessed and this is just another example of God's provisions and how incredible everyone has been. Thank you for your support and prayers as always and have a great evening!!!

We have had another good day in Houston and the boys are already sleeping (6:30 Houston time) so I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who attended and/or participated in the benefit for Cash last evening.

We were overwhelmed with the support and how the community came together to help Cash. I am still waiting for details and pictures from the event, including how many people cut their hair in the Cuts for Cash, however while I wait I wanted to blog and thank everyone.

From the committee that worked so hard to the generous donations to those who bought items or simply donated, we would like to say Thank You! I will write more later next week and a simple, written Thank You doesn't even begin to describe how appreciative we are, however please know that from the Parriera and VanderHoek families we appreciate you and Thank God for you.
